A Utah mom went above and beyond to make sure her son was happy on “Doughnuts with Dad” day at school.
Whitney Kittrell’s shared a photo to Facebook last week that has since been share more than 100,000 times. In the post, she explained that three years ago, she made a promise to herself and her kids that she would give them a normal life, even though she’s a single mom.
“We have accomplished a lot,” wrote Kittrell. “Trips alone. Teaching my son how to play catch, killing bugs with minimal screaming, countless memories, and a normal life.”
She said she was recently hit with a new challenge when her kindergartener brought home an invitation for their “dads and doughnuts” event at school.
“I finally sat him down and asked if he wanted to ask his grandpa to go,” wrote Kittrell. “He just smiled and said, ‘No. I want you to go. You’re my mom and dad.'”
So last week, Kittrell dressed wore a t-shirt, a baseball cap and painted-on facial hair and walked in to her son’s school
“I was so embarrassed but I couldn’t help but smile when he introduced me to his little friends saying, ‘This is my mom… she’s my dad too so I brought her!'”
She said her son’s reaction was worth the minor embarrassment.
“I’ve tried my best to let them know they are loved but I wonder a lot if I’m actually succeeding at it. When I went to leave he ran after me and hugged me tight around my neck and whispered, ‘Mom… I know that you’ll always be there and do anything for me. Thank you. I love you’, kissed my cheek and ran off. I hope he remembers this day cause I’ll never forget it or his sweet words,” wrote Kittrell.
