An update on a story we first told you about on our Facebook page Wednesday night: A community is now coming together to help an elderly cancer patient who called 911 because he was hungry and had no food to eat.

North Carolina veteran Earl Blackmon called 911 after coming home to an empty refrigerator from a lengthy hospital stay. The 81-year-old says he has no family nearby and no one to turn to for help.

911 operator Marilyn Hinson, along with police officers, answered his call in person, hand delivering groceries.

“He was hungry. I’ve been hungry, a lot of people can’t say that, but I have,” said Hinson.

“It was like a little miracle ringing in my eat and I thought, ‘Jesus you have answered those prayers,’” said Blackmon.

After hearing his story, the community has reached out to help Blackmon. He says his home is now filled with food thanks to kind strangers.
