Lionel Richie and Nicole Richie first met at a Prince concert, and at that moment, Lionel knew he had just made an important “discovery.”

“The discovery was not the show for Prince,” Richie said during an interview with the Huffington Post. “The discovery was: there’s a 2-year-old on stage with Prince playing a tambourine.”

That little girl was Nicole. Lionel knew Nicole’s biological parents, and later found out her family life wasn’t stable. He and his wife, Brenda Harvey Richie, decided to step in and help bring some stability to Nicole’s life by adopting her.

“I remember you had abandonment issues for obvious reasons,” Richie told Nicole during the interview. “You’d been handed around to every relative in the family. I remember what I said to you. I said, ‘I’m never going to leave you.'”

Lionel said he was hoping to change Nicole’s life by adopting her, but she ended up changing his too.

“All of a sudden I found something that I could actually fall in love with that was never going to leave me. How about that?” said Lionel.
