A senior couple is thanking their local firefighters for helping to repair roof damage and keep them safe.

Jesse Laguna, 82, and his wife, Joyce, 63, decided to take on a roofing project for their shed when estimates proved too pricey, KXAN reports.

Jesse Laguna bought a safety harness but couldn’t quite figure out how to use it. He decided to visit the fire station to ask for help.

Firefighter Daryl Burns was in the office when he heard Jesse Laguna chatting with some of his team members about how to use the safety harness.

That’s when another firefighter offered to stop by after his shift to help the senior couple.

“I said, ‘That’s an outstanding idea, why don’t we make that happen?'” said Burns.

“They said, ‘You go and start on it, and when we get off, we’ll help you come and finish it,’” said Jesse Laguna. “I thought, ‘Wow, we’re afraid that you might fall, and we don’t want that to happen.’”

Four firefighters stopped by that day and finished what would have taken Jesse Laguna days to complete in just a few minutes.

“All of us had an opportunity with a little bit of time in our afternoon, and it was like we can do something good with it,” said Burns.

To thank the firefighters, Joyce Laguna cooked the men lunch.

“I’m glad to say now I have four friends,” Jesse Laguna said.
