SACRAMENTO – A proud son’s tweet about his parents’ accomplishment against all odds is getting a lot of attention for all the right reasons.

Charles L. Cole III wrote, “My parents went back to college together and they graduated today. Together. #salute.” The tweet garnered more than 5,000 likes.

Cole’s father, Charles L Cole Jr., and his wife Renaté each earned a bachelor of arts degree in Biblical Studies on Dec. 3 from Sacramento Theological Seminary.

The couple told ABC News the road to success what a rocky one.

“Very young, we got addicted to crack cocaine,” Renaté told ABC News.

The couple has been married for 38 years and have now been sober for more than two decades. They have raised three kids together, including 33-year-old Charles L. Cole III. They say their son’s work ethic inspired them to earn their degrees.

“Our son is a go-getter,” Cole said. “By seeing his energy, his drive to just do it that kind of pushes us.”

The couple plans to continue their education and eventually earn their doctorate degrees. Their dream is to start their own church.
