QUINCY, Ill. – Two babies are getting a lot of attention because of the strikingly different appearances, despite the fact that they are actually twins.

Whitney Meyer and Thomas Dean from Quincy, Illinois welcomed their twin girls in April 2016. They told KHQA that they were surprised when their daughters were born looking very different, despite being twins.

“At first when they were born, I wanted to believe it but it’s so rare I didn’t think it’d happen to my twins!” Meyer told KHQA.

Jarani has dark skin and brown eyes, while her twin sister, Kalani, has light skin and blue eyes. Their parents are of different races; Meyer is white and Thomas is black.

According to the BBC, a biracial couple expecting fraternal twins has approximately a 1 in 500 chance of their twins being born with different complexions.

“They’re my miracle girls,” Whitney told ABC News. “”It has nothing to do with their color. I lost a child and a year-and-a-half later, I gained twins. I just wanted to share it and it’s been crazy ever since.”
