A little boy has finally been reunited with his lost teddy bear that represented his late father thanks to the kindness of strangers.
Mom Kelsey Higgins was distraught when her son’s favorite teddy bear disappeared after a trip to the mall.
“I figured that is was in the parking lot somewhere,” Higgins told WGME.
The bear is much more than a toy to her 3-year-old son, Nathan.
“Because it’s Dad,” said Higgins. “He’s had a really hard time dealing with everything since we lost Dad, so it means quite a bit that he has that bear.”
Nathan’s dad died in a car crash last year. The bear was specially made for Nathan as a keepsake. It was meant to carry some of his dad’s ashes some day.
“To him it’s like the only extension he has of his dad. When we gave it to him, we told him, ‘If you miss your dad, hug the bear. If you want to talk to your dad, talk to the bear,'” said Higgins.
Higgins said the bear is always with Nathan.
“His bedtime is usually at 8 p.m. Without Daddy Bear, it’s been closer to 11 p.m.,” Higgins told WCSH.
Higgins shared a post on social media, hoping someone would find the bear. It quickly went viral.
“Just the fact that how many people care to try and help us find a teddy bear is amazing,” said Higgins.
Then finally, on Wednesday, the bear was found by an man and his 3-year-old daughter.
According to WGME, he said he usually doesn’t let his daughter pick things up in parking lots, but she was insistent on saving the bear.
Later, he saw the post on social media.
Kelsy shared the happy update to her Facebook page and thanked everyone for their help.
“I never imagined that so many people would care that a 3-year-old was missing his teddy bear and actually try to help us look for him,” wrote Higgins. “It’s truly incredible and heartwarming to see how many kind people there are out there.”
