“NCIS” is planning to give Pauley Perrette, who stars as Abby Sciuto on the hit crime series, a proper goodbye, according to her co-star Mark Harmon.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the actor opened up about how the show is planning to send off one of its integral characters after 15 seasons. While many shows handle actors and actresses leaving by killing off their characters or sending them away, Harmon says “NCIS” fans have earned a sweet ending to Perrette’s story line.
“Oh, we’ll miss her. I’m really aware, and we’re all aware that audiences grow to love characters, and it’s a big deal. And we honor that,” Harmon said. “Fifteen years is a long time. People do what they do, and they move on and they do other things and that’s part of life.”
“It’s given us, as a show, an opportunity to rebirth, to rejuvenate, to try new things, to grow,” he added. “We adjust.”
Perrette announced her decision to leave the show last month, expressing her hope that fans continue to “love and enjoy EVERYTHING ABBY” for the rest of the season, adding, “I love her as much as you do.” Following her announcement, rumors started swirling that Harmon himself may be looking to leave the show soon too. However, that certainly didn’t seem to be the case when he sat down for an interview on Thursday.
“Right now our writers are all very up and excited,” he said of the possibility of parting ways with “NCIS” someday. “You can see it on their faces. Now, if I ever witness them walking into the writers’ room with their heads down, feeling they’ve done it all, that would be the time to say, ‘I think I’m done here.’ But there is still a real feeling of creativity and a sense of reinvention on our set.”
