LOS ANGELES – A police officer thought he was responding to a typical hit-and-run scene when he was called to an accident in Los Angeles.

But it turns out the crash was anything but typical.

LAPD officer John Neal Cooke says he arrived at the scene to find a fire hydrant spewing water and a child abandoned in the car.

Police said the 2-year-old boy was left alone by his 27-year-old mother who crashed and then took off.

“Witnesses tell us, ‘Hey, there was only one person involved and she went running down the street,'” said Cooke.

Video shows Cooke holding the scared toddler in his arms, comforting him.

“He was crying and reaching for me, so I mean it’s kind of just human nature,” said Cooke.

Police say the woman was found and arrested. The child was taken to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, but Cooke says he believes the toddler is with relatives now.
