The Oscars are nearly here, and Jimmy Kimmel says preparing to host Hollywood’s biggest night is grueling.

“It’s really a miserable process,” Kimmel told Hot Topics. “There’s a lot of hand-wringing. I wake up in the middle of the night with jokes in my head, I write them down, I can’t read the notes the next day.”

Kimmel has hosted the post-Oscars special for the past 11 years. This year will be his first year hosting the Academy Awards.

He said there’s a good chance politics will come up Sunday night.

“Depending on what’s going on that weekend, you never know what crazy story might pop up from the White House or from where ever, so that will be a game-time call, as they say,” said Kimmel. “But I’m sure there will be some political content on the show.”

Kimmel said he’s looking forward to the legendary Oscar post-parties, but he’s also looking forward to getting some sleep.

“One of the nice things about the Oscars and the award shows here on the West Coast is that they’re over by 8:30, so it’s not even like you have to be out that late. So that’s good for me,” joked Kimmel. “And also, I’m a good sleeper.”

He said the only opinions that will really matter on Oscar night are his wife’s and his writers’.

“We’ve been working on this show and writing jokes and we’re all hoping it goes well, and I think we’re all very critical. So if the writers feel like it went well, and I can tell they’re not lying just to make me feel good, then I think I’ll feel like it went well,” said Kimmel.

The 89th annual Academy Awards airs Sunday on ABC.
