LOS ANGELES – Tarek and Christina El Moussa of HGTV’s show “Flip or Flop” announced their separation Monday.

In May, police were called to their Orange County, California home after a “misunderstanding,” according to a statement the couple released to TMZ.

“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” the statement read. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed.”

TMZ reports witnesses saw Tarek take a gun from his safe, run out of the house onto a hiking trail. At least 11 officers responded after reports of a “possibly suicidal” male with a gun.

After dropping his gun, Tarek told deputies he went outside to calm down and had no intention of hurting himself or anyone else, TMZ reports.

The couple said Monday they are taking time apart after seeking counseling over the past few months.

“During the process, we are committed to out kids and being the best parents we can be,” the couple said in a statement. “We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively and plan to continue our professional life together.”

HGTV told People Magazine in a statement that the show, which began its seventh season on Dec. 1, will continue airing as scheduled.

“We admire and appreciate Tarek and Christina’s great work on Flip or Flip,” HGTV told People. “When it comes to matters related to their own family, we respect them and their children. HGTV is currently airing episodes of ‘Flip or Flop’ and the series will continue production as scheduled.”

The couple was married in 2009. They have two kids together — Brayden, 1, and Taylor, 6.
