GULFPORT, Miss. – A widower who lost his wife to cancer is selling kindling on the side of the road to raise money to cover her medical bills.
Kenneth Smith stands on the roadside in Gulfport, Mississippi selling kindling for $5 a bundle. Last year, his wife stood by him as has sold the wood to raise money for her medical bills.
She eventually lost her battle with cancer. Though she is gone, Kenneth is still facing a mountain of debt for her treatment.
“She’s a proud woman because she’s looking down on me,” Kenneth told WLOX.
Jessica Pittman, a resident in the area, created a Facebook post about Kenneth’s roadside business. Within hours, thousands of people had liked, shared and commented on her post.
Soon, a GoFundMe page was set up. So far, it has raised more than $100,000 for Kenneth.
“It makes me think that we live in a good country and this is part of it,” said Kenneth.
