A college student is thanking her local police officers for raising money to replace her stolen college fund.

Kristin Villanueva of El Segundo, California graduated high school as valedictorian and now studies engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Over the years, she socked away all the money she earned as a tutor to save up for college. She was heartbroken after a recent burglary at her home.

“The suspects had stolen the tutoring money I had been saving for four years,” Villanueva told KCAL.

Police officers, upset by what happened, started a GoFundMe page to replace the stolen money. Within nine days, they officers raised more than $5,000.

The officers gave Villanueva the check on Tuesday.

“It was a bummer, but I’m really happy that they were able to turn it around,” said Villanueva.
