A homeless veteran is getting the hero’s farewell he deserves thanks to a funeral home.

Sergeant John Beard of St. Louis, Missouri served in the United States Air Force in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. He became homeless after returning from war and died from cancer at 67.

When the Michel Funeral Home heard Beard’s heartbreaking story, they donated their services, including full military honors at Jefferson Barracks, according to KTVI.

Beard was escorted by the Patriot Guard to Jefferson Barracks, with dozens of strangers saluting the procession as it made its way to his final resting place.
