A 79-year-old great-grandmother of six has graduated from college, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Lucy Capers, 79, was born in Alabama and attended a segregated elementary school. Capers didn’t earn her GED until 1957, after she got married, moved to Maryland and had kids.

“Basically, I always wanted an education,” Capers told WUSA. “And the more you learn, the more you can open up to new things and look at the world in a different way.”

Capers started at Maryland University College in 2012 and finally earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Studies earlier this month.

She hopes her accomplishment sets a good example for her six great-grandchildren.

“If an old lady can do it, you can do it,” said Capers.
