A dad who watched his son struggle with cancer treatments and surgery scars decided to show his support in a heartwarming way.

Josh Marshall recently tattooed a replica of his son’s cancer treatment scar on his head. A photo of his scar is now going viral and earned him a prize in a Father’s Day competition.

According to ABC News, Gabriel Marshal was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma in 2015. He’s now 8 years old.

Surgeries to remove the tumor left Gabriel bald. He was also left with a long scar above his left ear.

“It was kind of embarrassing to me, because I really didn’t like it when people were staring at me,” Gabriel told NBC News.

“It was mainly a lot of little kids that were the ones that would stare at him,” said Josh Marshall. “And he was afraid… what his friends would think at school… So that’s when I made the decision.”

Josh Marshall’s tattoo boosted Gabriel’s confidence. He posted the photo to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Facebook page, where it earned him the Best Bald Dad award.

Since earning the title, the photo has gone viral, getting attention from people all around the country.

“It just started as a friendly competition for Father’s Day and then it just blew up. It’s really weird,” Josh Marshall told the Huffington Post. “But it’s raising awareness for childhood cancer, and that’s all that really matters.”

Josh Marshall says all dads deserve to be honored for their devotion to their children.

“I would like to thank everyone for helping make this happen it’s an honor to be titled 2016’s ‪#‎BestBaldDad, but the truth is I’m no better then any of the other contestants. We are all great fathers that would go to any extent to help our children, so in my eyes we’re all winners! Hope you all have a great week and a happy father’s day to all you men making a difference in your children’s lives!” Marshall wrote on Facebook.
