An 80-year-old retired Minnesota teacher is thanking three high school seniors and his community for helping his wife get the medical care she desperately needed.

Walter Erickson, 80, of Minneapolis, retired from teaching and has been working as a substitute teacher since 1991, WCCO reports. He works almost every day of the school year at Champlin Park High School.

“Honestly, I’ve never seen a sub so old; you would think he would be retired,” said Kelsy Breiter, a senior.

When she, senior Kate Boldgett and another friend found found out Erikson was saving up for his wife’s cataract surgery and dental work, they started a GoFundMe page to help.

“When we found out the surgery may not be covered, we just wanted to help out,” said Breiter.

So far, the page has raised more than $13,000 for the retired teacher.

Erikson and his wife were blown away.

“When I told my wife about this last Friday, she said, ‘Who are these girls? What kind of parents do they have that they could be so caring and compassionate?’” Erickson told WCCO.
