FREEPORT, Ill. – After 76 years of marriage, a man and woman say they still have plenty to smile about.
In their 100 years of life, John and Vera Peterson fell in love, raised seven children and now enjoy the company of 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
“I have been blessed with a good life of husband and family,” Vera told the Journal Standard. “I’ve stayed active, have had a good attitude and I try to stay away from doctors as much as possible.”
The Illinois couple say it was love at first sight when they first laid eyes on each other more than seven decades ago. The decision to get married was quick. They got married in 1938 while on a road trip.
“…we stopped in Des Moines to find a minister and got married at his home,” said Vera.
Vera celebrated her 100th birthday in August, and John will celebrate his in March.
They say they’ve shared lots of laughs over the years, and plan to share many more in the future.
“I have been laughing for almost 100 years, and I plan to keep laughing,” said Vera.
