ATLANTA – Firefighters in metro Atlanta are taking steps toward finding a cure for lung cancer.
They are training to climb 55 floors, or 1,275 steps in honor of The Fight for Air Climb to raise money for the American Lung Association.
Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. WSB-TV’s People 2 People reports more than two million new cases are reported every year.
“In 2008 my mom died of lung cancer and somebody turned me on to this event,” said Jason Peckham of Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services. “In 2009 was the first year I climbed and so every year I climb I do it in honor of her.”
The event will be held at the Bank of America Plaza in Atlanta on April 22. Money raised will support research and patient education.
