When Macy Mathis turned 16 years old, she wrote her mom 25 inspirational letters. Shortly after her birthday, Macy was killed in a car crash in Tift County, Ga., along with her boyfriend.

Now, mom Cindy Mathis is finding comfort in the letters her daughter left behind.

“She helped me out in a lot of ways that I didn’t realize until after she passed,” Cindy Mathis told WALB.

Each letter Macy wrote was sealed in an envelope, with instructions on when to open it.

One letter labeled “Open when you feel lonely” has a very special meaning to Cindy Mathis now.

“I’ll play with you hair and rub your back until you fall asleep,” Cindy Mathis read from her daughter’s letter. “I miss being that close to you because I feel like your little girl again. Please, don’t feel lonely mommy. You always have me. Macy.”

Of the 25 letters, Cindy Mathis only opened three before her daughter’s death.

“I’m thankful I only opened three, because I need them more now,” said Mathis.
