After House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot during the Republican congressional team’s baseball practice early Wednesday morning, Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., called the representative’s wife to tell her that her husband had been shot so she wouldn’t find out on the news.

Scalise and four others, including two Capitol Hill police officers, were injured after a gunmen opened fire at the field were the team was practicing at in Alexandria, Va. Scalise is in surgery and in stable condition, and the shooter has died from injuries he sustained after being shot by law enforcement.

“I got Steve Scalise’s phone and called his wife,” Flake told reporters. “I didn’t want her to wake up and hear the news, not know what was going on.”
