WEST ORANGE, N.J. – An 11-year-old girl from New Jersey says she’s doing her part, sparking change with a book drive aimed at diversity.

Marly Dias says she loves to read, but wants to see more diversity in the books.

“I wasn’t seeing black girls represented in the books we were reading, I wasn’t seeing characters like me or diverse experiences,” said Dias.

Using the hastag #1000BlackGirlBooks, she’s been able to collect more than 7,000 book where black girls are the main characters. She’s donated those books to six different cities.

“I knew how to find diverse books in my community but I wanted to do it for other communities that I know do not have these resources,” said Dias.

Marley says she hopes to someday write her own book.
