When a man watched a McDonald’s worker refuse to give a homeless woman a cup of water, he knew he had to step in and help.

Jonathon Pengelly explained that his night took an unexpected turn while he was waiting in line at a McDonald’s restaurant in the United Kingdom. He said he couldn’t believe that a staff member refused to give the clearly homeless woman, named Polly, a cup of hot water.

“My heart was shattered! So I spoke to her and told her to order what she wanted, expecting her to order everything. I was so shocked,” Pengelly wrote in a now-viral Facebook post. “She asked for a single cheeseburger and that was it. We bought as much as we could carry so I knew she wasn’t going to be hungry.”

He sat down on the ground with Polly and her friend, eating cheeseburgers and talking about their lives.

“When I got to speak to them I was genuinely shocked at their story and how educated they were! So full of life and enthusiasm and they literally have nothing!” wrote Pengelly.

Pengelly invited Polly and her friend back to his house. He cooked them food and packed it up for them so they would have something to eat over the next few days. He also let them take showers and brush their teeth.

“…[T]hey both said they have ever felt so appreciated in their life,” wrote Pengelly.

Pengelly has kept in touch with his new friends since posting his story Saturday.

“If you see someone on the streets, don’t look down on them like they’re nothing. You don’t know what they’ve been though! Spare a little thought!” wrote Pengelly.
