AUSTIN, Texas – A Texas valedictorian who just graduated from Austin’s Crockett High School has come under fire for a tweet in which she listed her accomplishments, mentioned that she’ll be attending the University of Texas and said, as an aside, that she is “undocumented.”
“Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords and medals, nice legs, oh and I’m undocumented,” Mayte Lara tweeted.
The tweet was deleted – along with Lara’s Twitter account – after it made the rounds online.
The Daily Mail reported that Lara and a friend had a conversation on Twitter before she deleted everything.
“I want all this attention from strangers to stop already,” she tweeted.
“I checked your tweet this morning and it BLEW up. LOL,” Manuel Varela replied.
Lara answered, “I know! I didn’t think it would do that tbh and it’s kinda scary and want to stop.”
UT-Austin’s Longhorn Dreamers Project offers services to undocumented students.
Texas is one of several states that allows undocumented students who graduate from an in-state high school to receive in-state tuition.
The response to Lara’s tweet has been mixed.
Some have called her “the dumbest undocumented valedictorian,” while others have called for her to be deported.
Even a “dank meme” was created to echo the call to deport.
But Lara also has many supporters.
One person said there’s a “special place in hell” for people reporting Lara.
