LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A police officer in Little Rock, Arkansas is redefining community policing, and now even celebrities are taking notice.
Officer Tommy Norman, 43, of the Little Rock Police Department has garnered a massive social media following. He now has over 1.2 million followers on Instagram. Everyday, he posts photos and videos of himself interacting with kids and adults in his community to social media.
“The more time you spend out of your patrol car, the bigger difference you can make,” Norman wrote in the caption of one Instagram post.
In the wake of the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile as well as the attacks on police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Norman’s message seems to be resonating stronger than ever with his followers.
“My hopes are that these children can go to bed at night at peace, knowing that their best friend/police officer is committed to them & their well being, for life!” Norman wrote in one photo’s caption.
Kids often run up to Norman’s patrol car when he pulls into their neighborhood, and he always has a smile – sometimes even treats for them, like toys and candy bars.
“Officer Norman is my best friend,” 5-year-old Amiyah told WTHV.
The rapper, The Game, took notice of Norman’s kindness. According to Billboard, his teenage son recently started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the officer. The Game donated the first $1,000 to the GoFundMe page.
So far, they have raised more than $72,000.
People across the country have also been donating toys and treats to the police station.
Norman says their department plans to send some of the extra supplies to nearby communities.
