MANCHESTER, Ky. – A 9-year-old girl is safe today thanks to a driver who spotted her asleep on the side of the road after she escaped a crash that killed her mother.
According to Kentucky State Police, Chasity Murphy, 34, was driving Sunday night with her daughter, Mylee, in the backseat when she lost control of the car. The car careened off the road and landed upside-down in a creek.
Officials say Murphy was trapped and drowned, but Mylee managed to escape through a window in the backseat. She swam to safety and fell asleep on the side of a road.
The next morning, a passing driver and his wife just happened to pull over to the side of the road, where they spotted the girl.
“I lifted her over the guardrail and asked her what happened. She said, ‘My mommy wrecked and I climbed out the window,'” driver Lee Roy Couch told WKYT. “God works miracles. There was just one spot where I could see the car, and that spot was where the kid was standing down the hill. You couldn’t see her from the parkway.”
Mylee was taken to a nearby hospital and has since been released.
