MARYVILLE, Tenn. – An elderly woman says two American flags that flew in front of her home were set on fire. Now, the community is coming together to show her support.
DeWayne Phillips says his 79-year-old mother was shaken up after finding her flags torched, twice in one week, outside her Maryland home.
“We think it’s kids that possibly don’t know any better. Why?” Phillips told WATE.
Since the flags were burned, the Maryville Police Department and other members of the community have donated more than 20 flags to the woman. Now, the front of her home is covered in flags.
“We’re not going to stop; we’ll put up flags every day. If they burn them down every day we’ll put up a new flag every day,” said Phillips.
