SAN ANTONIO – It was parents’ night for 9-year-old Addie’s cheer squad, and watching all the other dads on the field made her miss her military dad. When a teen saw her crying, he didn’t hesitate to jump onto the field and make her night.
Addie’s cheerleading squad was performing at a football game at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, WOAI reports. Since it was parents’ night, all the dads of the girls came onto the field and lifted their daughters onto their shoulders.
Addie’s dad is a senior airman and is currently training in California, so he couldn’t make it to her game. She was suddenly overwhelmed with sadness as she watched the girls on the field with their dads and started to cry.
Matthew Garcia, a senior at Central Catholic High School, spotted the girl crying and ran down to comfort her.
“I ran down from the bleachers right here,” he said, “and I just hopped the fence, and I went over, and I kneeled down, I talked to her and I said, ‘Are you OK?’”
Matthew lifted Addie on to his shoulders, making her smile when she needed it most.
Addie’s mom, Alexis, was in the stands and was touched by the teen’s kindness.
“My heart just melted. It was just the most beautiful thing,” said Alexis.
Addie said she’s so grateful Matthew, a total stranger at the time, was there for her.
“I just felt like somebody saved my life,” said Addie.
