ATLANTA – Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn will celebrate 70 years of marriage on July 7.
The couple told the Associated Press that their journey together wasn’t always smooth sailing.
In 2015, doctors found four small tumors in Jimmy Carter’s brain.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do,” the former first lady told the AP. “I depend on him when I have questions, when I’m writing speeches, anything, I consult with him.”
The couple says it was a miracle he survived the diagnosis.
“We expected my life to be over,” Jimmy Carter, 91, said. “We had to accommodate that crisis, and then I got treatment and it started working.”
Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn’s love story began as teenagers in 1945. After their first date, Jimmy Carter knew he was going to marry Rosalynn. They tied the knot in 1946.
“Space and doing things together and respecting what each other can do are the things that have made it really special,” Rosalynn Carter said.
Since leaving office, Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn have dedicated themselves to helping others.
According to the AP, the couple’s marriage is the second-longest among first couples. George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush have been together for 71 years.
