AMARILLO, Tx. – A group of police officers stepped up for a fallen colleague’s son on his first day of school.

Four-year-old Jackson Scherlen walked bravely into Coronado Elementary after getting a round of hugs and high-fives from Amarillo Police officers in Texas.

“I think his daddy would be very proud of how his brothers and sisters have stepped up to be here for his kids,” mom Jessica Scherlen told KVII.

Officer Justin Sherlen died two weeks ago, nearly a year after suffering serious injuries in an on-duty car crash. He underwent multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation following the crash. He died while on vacation with his family in New Mexico.

The official cause of death has not yet been identified, KVII reports.

“He was always so kind to everyone,” said his colleague Carla Burr. “Even this last year when he was in so much pain and not even able to walk on his own sometimes, he would always ask what he could do for you. Constantly checking in on people.”

Jessica says she’s grateful that her family in blue has shown them such unwavering support.

“I think Jackson really enjoyed having everyone here,” Scherlen said. “Just to know that he’s still loved by the blue family and that they still care. Emotionally, it’s awesome to see.”
