DETROIT – A 23-year-old man who was wrongfully convicted of murder has been released from prison. He has been behind bars since he was 14-years-old.
Davonte Sanford was serving a 37-90 year prison sentence for a quadruple homicide. His attorneys argued that he gave a false confession and ended up behind bars.
According to ABC News, his attorney at the time advised him to plead guilty. That attorney is now suspended.
A re-investigation revealed major gaps in the case.
Heidi A. Naasko, a pro bono attorney for Sanford, said just two weeks after Sanford was sentenced, a professional hitman took responsibility for the murders, along with 8 other murders.
Sanford walked out of prison on Wednesday.
“We are just thrilled with the outcome,” said Naasko.
