MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A husband lost his life while fighting to save his wife from a dangerous rip current.
Kendra Smith and her husband, Sherrod Whittington, made the trip to Miami Beach from Fort Meyers for a day trip.
“I would have never guessed in a million years that we were going to have fun, and the next thing you know, he’s gone,” Smith told WSVN.
They were relaxing in the water when suddenly a rip current carried them away.
“I was trying to hold on to him and he was trying to hold on to me,” said Smith. “In some kind of way… he lost his grasp and then he got back to me again.”
A lifeguard quickly rushed to their side. Whittington told the life guard to save his wife.
“I told them I didn’t want to live my life without him. Please save him,” recalled Smith.
Lifeguards started CPR on Whittington after pulling him from the ocean, but he was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
“Life is just so short,” Smith told WSVN. “But he’ll always be my hero.”
