COLUMBIA, S.C. – A 65-year-old man is apologizing after picking up the wrong child from a South Carolina elementary school.
Joseph Fuller went to Edisto Primary School to pick up his grandchild early from school on May 19. WIS-TV reports he saw a group of students in the gymnasium and spotted a boy he thought was his grandson.
After giving the boy a hug, Fuller told the boy he was there to pick him up early from school. He asked the boy if he was ready to do, and he said, “Yes.”
A teacher’s assistant asked the boy if the man was his grandpa, and the boy said yes. Fuller’s name was on the list of approved people who can pick up students, so the school released the boy to him.
Fuller’s wife was in the car waiting for them. She handed the boy a Happy Meal without turning around. It wasn’t until the couple arrived at home that they realized the boy wasn’t their grandchild.
“He had a tooth missing in the front, and I know my grandson did not have a tooth missing in the front,” Fuller told WIS-TV. “Immediately, I brought him back to school, and I am very sorry.”
They returned to school, and school administrators notified the boy’s parents.
The school has since modified their checkout procedure for students.
