DELAND, Fla. — Joey Maxwell wanted to give his beloved dog, who is battling cancer, a special ride, and the journey has touched the hearts of people around the world.

Maverick is a 9-year-old Golden Retriever who is battling lymphoma for the second time. While Maverick has responded well to chemotherapy, he gave his owners a scare this month when he had to be rushed to the animal hospital and spent two nights in the ICU.

After being discharged, Maxwell wanted to treat his dog to a ride around town, but he needed a wagon, since Maverick is unable to walk. He went to his local Lowe’s, but the wagon inventory was depleted in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

But once they heard what the wagon was going to be used for, Lowe’s staff sprang into action. They called area stores until they tracked down a wagon, had it sent to the store Maxwell was at and even put it together for him.

Maxwell took Maverick on a joyous ride around downtown Deland, where Maverick made many new friends and enjoyed a few treats. According to the latest update on the Everybody Loves Maverick Facebook page, Maverick’s health has stabilized and Maxwell is continuing to take him on wagon rides.
