WHITTIER, Calif. – A man says he was shocked when his ‘dangerous’ dog stopped in his tracks to save a tiny, dying hummingbird.

Ed Gernon told KCBS he adopted his dog, Rex, last year. He explained that his dog fought other dogs and killed cats.

“He was dangerous,” said Gernon. “He was an animal that had learned to live on the streets and survive on his own hunting ability, I guess.”

Gernon says he was stunned one day when Rex insisted on helping a tiny hummingbird.

“And he suddenly stopped and he would not move,” said Gernon. “I mean, it’s tiny and it’s dead as far as I’m concerned. It’s covered in ants. It’s got no feathers.”

So Gernon helped the dying bird, bringing it into his home and nursed it back to health. He now feeds it every fifteen minutes.

And it looks like the hummingbird has found its permanent home.

“It’s time for her to start mating and I keep leaving the doors and windows open thinking she’ll leave,” he said.
