SURREY, British Columbia – Earlier this year, a Anita and Wolfram Gottschalk’s heartbreak went viral after getting placed in separate nursing homes. Just weeks after being reunited, Wolfram passed away.

“She is lost without him,” the couple’s son, Bill Gottschalk, told People.

A photo of the British Columbia couple wiping away tears went viral earlier this year. Their granddaughter posted the photo to Facebook, explaining that the couple married 62 years were placed in separate nursing homes.

“They cry every time they see each other, and it is heartbreaking,” Ashley Bartyik wrote on Facebook. The day Ashley posted the photo, Wolfram was also diagnosed with cancer.

The frustrated family worked with Fraser Health for more than 8 months to reunite the elderly couple. In September, after their story went viral, Anita and Wolfram moved into the same nursing home.

A video of the couple sharing a kiss after their reunion warmed hearts across the country.

Just weeks after their reunion, Wolfram was hospitalized because of his health. He passed away on Saturday surrounded by family.
