POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Karl and Elizabeth Gfatter met as children. Now they are celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.
The couple renewed their vows over the weekend – their love just as strong as they day they tied the knot.
The Gfatters dated when they were in high school and were married shortly after.
“We eloped because they didn’t want us to get married yet — they said we were too young,” Elizabeth told WABC-TV.
Karl said his father told him the marriage wouldn’t last.
“He said, ‘I’ll tell you what, if it lasts more than a year I’ll give you 100 bucks,'” Karl said.
Seventy-five years later, they are still by each other’s side. In the good and bad, Karl and Elizabeth’s love has remained strong through it all.
The couple went on to have a daughter, who passed away in 2015.
“He just said he loved me, and that’s all that mattered,” Elizabeth told WABC-TV.
Elizabeth revealed the key to their long marriage: “Love and honesty … and be good to each other.”
