ACWORTH, Ga. –¬†An elderly couple both battling stage IV cancer reunited for the first time in days, after undergoing difficult treatment apart.

Susan Stros, 70 and Jerry Stros, 71, were high school sweethearts and have been married for 51 years. The couple now lives in Acworth, Georgia.

In late February, Susan was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Family members told ABC News that Jerry, as in love with his wife as ever, stayed by her side around the clock.

“Here’s my dad, by her side 24 hours a day, never going home, staying there and trying to care for her,” said their son, Jason Stros.

Then, a few days later, Jason suffered a seizure, causing him to fall in front of his wife and break his back.

He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors discovered Jerry also had stage IV cancer in his brain.

The couple, getting treatment at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, were wheeled into the same room. Doctors told them it might be the last time they see each other. Family members told ABC News they were given time to say goodbye.

To the family’s relief, Susan responded well to treatment and was sent home last week. Jerry, however, stayed behind. Doctors finally released him on Saturday.

Family members welcomed Jerry home this weekend, and Jason managed to capture his parents’ tearful reunion on camera.

Susan got up and walked toward her husband, something she wasn’t able to do for days. She sat down and laid her head on Jerry’s shoulder as Jerry began to cry.

“They don’t know if tomorrow is coming, but they’re not going to stop fighting. Their love is so strong that they’re going to keep fighting this fight together rather than alone,” said Jason.
