As the end of Joey Feek’s terminal cancer battle draws close, the country singer is beginning the excruciating task of saying goodbye to the ones she loves.

Joey, 40, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May 2014, three months after giving birth to their daughter, Indiana.

The aggressive cancer stopped responding to treatment, and the couple made the difficult decision to enter hospice care late last year.

Her husband, Rory Feek, described her best friend’s sacrifice for the past few days.

Julie travelled from Oregon to Indiana so spend a week with Joey.

Julie has been helping them cook, clean and care for their daughter, Indiana.

“[She] does any and everything else that she can find to do that needs to be done while we’re living here out of suitcases… not waiting for someone we love to die.  But helping the woman we all love to live,” wrote Rory.

In his most recent blog post, Rory explained the unlikely friendship he and his wife formed with Julie about seven years ago. She was a big fan of the country duo, Joey and Rory.

Julie lost two of her best friends to cancer and said their music helped her heal. They met at an event, and have been close friends ever since.

Rory said at first it wasn’t clear why Julie suddenly appeared in their lives, until Joey got the devastating diagnosis in May 2014.

“Like an angel from heaven, it was as if God sent Julie to us. To her.  But none of us exactly knew why, until the cancer showed up again this summer,” Rory wrote.

On Saturday, Julie’s flight was booked, and she was ready to fly back home to Oregon.

Just before they said goodbye to each other, Joey began to cry uncontrollably.

“I put my arms around her and asked what was wrong,” wrote Rory. “As her lips quivered and she tried to catch her breath, the tears streamed her cheeks and Joey said, ‘I don’t think I will ever see her again.'”

So instead of leaving, Julie stayed to comfort her best friend for a little longer.

“And as God would have it, the tables have turned and now it’s easy to see… Joey and I are Julie’s biggest fans,” wrote Rory.
