Rescuers in Japan are searching for a 7-year-old boy after his parents say they left him in the woods as punishment.

According to CNN, Yamato Tanooka disappeared around 4 p.m. local time in Japan.

Police said they received a call from his parents around 6:00. They initially told officials he got lost as they looked for vegetables in the woods. They later admitted they left the boy alone as punishment for throwing rocks at passing cars.

The BBC reports hundreds of emergency workers combed the woods for signs of the boy.

The area is home to wild bears.
