A father who abandoned his son in the woods is thanking rescuers and apologizing to his 7-year-old son who was found safe after six days of intensive searching.

Police in Japan say they found the boy inside the grounds of a military base Thursday morning, according to NBC News. Other than dehydration and undernourishment, the boy was doing remarkably well.

His parents initially told police their son wandered away while the family looked for vegetables in the woods. Later, they changed their story saying they abandoned him as punishment.

The boy was treated at a hospital as his father, Takayuki Tanooka, apologized for putting his son through “an extremely painful experience and caused tremendous trouble to people at his school and for those who searched for him.”

“I think my actions were very excessive and I deeply regret it,” said Tanooka.

It’s not clear whether the parents will be charged.
