NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – As temperatures in one Virginia city topped 105 degrees, an 8-year-old boy went the extra mile to make sure his mailman stayed safe in the heat.
Carmine McDaniel of Newport News, Virginia has always had a special relationship with his mailman. On Thursday as temperatures climbed to dangerous levels, he immediately thought of the man who has to walk door-to-door delivering mail.
“I just thought because it was really hot outside and I didn’t want him to maybe pass out or anything, because they are really important so people can pay their bills and stuff like that. I didn’t want him to pass out pretty much,” McDaniel told WVEC.
McDaniel filled up a cooler with ice and cold drinks, so the mailman could catch a moment of relief in the scorching heat.
His mom posted a sweet video to Instagram showing the mailman’s appreciation for the small gesture.
“Yes! I’ll take ’em all!” the mailman is heard saying on camera. “I’ll take a water and a Gatorade.”
He told WVEC that these small gestures make the summer much more bearable.
“It makes it worthwhile,” said the mailman.
