The Orem Owlz, a minor league baseball team in Utah, scheduled the white appreciation event which would include Wonder Bread on burgers with mayo and a vertical jumping contest.

Within hours of posting a promotion, and two days after the deadly church shootings in Charleston, South Carolina, the team canceled the event after social media lit up.

The night was meant to be a lighthearted event, according the team’s official statement.

“We understand, in light of recent tragic events, that our intentions have been misconstrued. For that, we sincerely apologize,” read the statement.
