A family is mourning the loss of a mother of six, who was killed while driving home after visiting her premature twins in the NICU.

Police say Katie Evans, 37, was returning to her Santa Clarita, Calif., home when she was struck and killed by a 22-year-old driver, suspected of DUI, the Signal reports.

Evans had given birth to twin daughters eight weeks earlier.

“Katie couldn’t go a day without visiting her brand-new twin girls in the hospital,” loved ones wrote on a YouCaring page.

Katie leaves behind her husband, Jacob Evans, and her six children ranging in age from 12 years old to 8 years old.

“We had people here when I told the kids that their mom was gone,” Jacob Evans told KTLA. “It was really important, because every kid needed a hug, and I could only really hug one at a time.”
