GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A family is mourning the loss of one of their newborn twin boys after a photo of them went viral.

Mason and Hawk Buchmeyer stole hearts across the county when they were just 11 days old. The boys’ mother told WPEC  Hawk was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, a rare and often fatal condition.

He was placed on a ventilator at a Florida hospital, where he stayed for weeks.

One day, Mason was getting fussy, and a nurse suggested mom Brandy Guettler place him next to his brother for some comfort.

“So we laid him there and all of a sudden, as soon as he felt Hawk, he reached his arm out and grabbed him and just started to smile. The two of them knew they were there for each other,” Guettler told WPEC.

Guettler snapped a photo of the happy moment and posted it to Facebook, where thousands of people liked and shared it, hoping Hawk would recover.

A few days after posting the touching photo, the family shared heartbreaking news.

“Our hearts are saddened this morning as our sweet little man was called home to be with Jesus,” read a post on the family’s Facebook page. “He went very peacefully and we know he’s no longer suffering.”

People across the country once again rallied behind the family, offering prayers and kind words following their loss.
