SANTA ANA, Calif. – Moments after a jury found him guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl, a former English teacher slit his own throat in a Santa Ana, California courtroom.

Jeffery Scott Jones, 56, of Huntington Beach, California was rushed to a hospital after officials say he used small razor to slit his throat as he was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one felony county of continuous sexual abuse.

“I didn’t see it even though I was sitting next to him,” defense attorney Ed Welbourn told KCBS. “At that point, he passed out or something happened and he hit the table, which is when I noticed something was happening.”

Jones survived and was rushed to a hospital.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said they are investigating into how Jones was able to bring the razor blade into court.

Jones faces up to 66 years in prison. He taught high school English in California for 27 years.
