Marcos Danilo, goalkeeper for a Brazilian soccer team, was able to speak to his wife one last time after rescuers pulled him from the wreckage of a plane crash that killed 76 of the 81 people on board. Later, he died from his injuries at a Colombian hospital.
The plane was carrying the Chapecoense soccer team. The team was traveling to the Copa Sudamerica finals when their chartered plane slammed into a hill.
According to The Sun, the 31-year-old father spoke to his wife, Leticia, on the phone before succumbing to his injuries. He had one son, Lorenzo.
President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia called the crash “a tragedy that has the whole region in mourning.”
