A Milwaukee man is thanking his community for helping him overcome a debilitating condition and give him a new outlook.

“I feel a lot lighter. It’s a weight off my shoulders. I’m energetic. I feel more of myself. I feel more alive,” Keith Crowell told WITI  after undergoing a life-changing surgery to remove massive keloids from the sides of his face.

He said he was nicked by a barber 13 years ago. Ever since, he’s had to deal with the condition. The cuts never healed, and at one point he had to get 40 pounds of the excess skin removed from his face.

Crowell was denied by his insurance, but people across the country donated to Crowell on a GoFundMe page, raising money for him to undergo plastic surgery in New York.

He said it has changed his life.

“My burden is over with. I can sleep at night. I can eat,” Crowell said. “I’m more of a people person than I was before.”

He thanked everyone for helping in his recovery.

“Thank you. Thank you for your support and thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done for me,” Crowell said.
