COPLEY, Ohio – What started as an attempt to get rid of an unwanted dog turned into a touching adoption story.
A maintenance worker at an apartment complex in Copley, Ohio found the year-old dog in a dumpster and called police.
The dog’s owner, 22-year-old Diamond Ownes, told police she tried to break her dog’s neck before throwing her in the trash, WEWS-TV reports. She is now serving jail time for animal cruelty.
“She told our police officers that the dog had bitten her boyfriend a couple of times and needed to be euthanized,” police chief Mike Miller said.
But thankfully the story has a happy ending. According to police, the dog was taken to an animal hospital and is now in good health. Police officer Chris Santimarino adopted the dog, named Honey, just a few days later.
“She’s now part of our family,” said Santimarino.
