Jay Phillips knows funny.
He got his first big break on radio in Baltimore then soon became a breakout success at the HBO Comedy Festival. He’s performed on ‘The Late Late Show’, ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ and Showtime’s ‘Big Black Comedy Show.’
Now the comedian is playing James Finley in ‘Grown Folks’ on Bounce TV.
“What I like about it so much is that it’s a little bit different than me. It’s outside the box,” Phillips told WSB Radio’s Condace Pressley.
The show follows two blue-collar couples who share a duplex while navigating life, marriage and friendship. Other actors on the show include Gary “G-Thang” Johnson, Tracey Cherelle Jones, Caryn Ward Ross, Oren Williams and Durrell “Tank” Babbs.
Phillips says he has a special sense of pride being on a show with African Americans on a network that caters towards African Americans.
“It’s really cool to do that for an urban network, because you keep hearing that the black sitcom is not here no more. It’s gone. It’s fading out. I believe it’s not fading out. It’s right here. It’s just a matter of creating a proper content for it and having a voice that the people want to see, a voice people want to hear. I think we were able to come up with some really cool, relatable characters and some great story lines.”
